About

I am a Professor of Astronomy at the Institute for Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and currently the Robert F. Kennedy visiting professor at the Black Hole Initiative and David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University. I received my Ph.D in 1998 from Grenoble Alpes University, and have held positions at the Institute for Millimeter Radio Astronomy and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy.
I specialize in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), with a particular focus on VLBI astrometry. I am lucky to collaborate with a fantastic group of people. More information about my research can be found on LinkedIn, Google Scholar, and NASA ADS (also referenced at the bottom of this page), and following the items in the top menu.
I have been a member of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHTC) ever since its creation in 2017. Over the years, I have held several leadership positions within the EHTC, including as chair of its Publication Committee during the exciting times when the first eight M87 papers were being prepared and published. I currently serve as chair of the Calibration and Error Analysis working group.
I have been fortunate to receive a number of awards and accolades, which include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2010), the von Humboldt Foundation Bessel Prize (2011), and the TWAS Prize 2022. As a member of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, which obtained the first image of the supermassive black hole at the center of M87, I also shared the 2020 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, the 2020 Einstein Medal, and the 2021 Group Award of the UK’s Royal Astronomical Society.
