How to use an anonymous proxy server for http

14 Apr 2005

Why?

Apparently, the BBC, Channel 4, bfi, etc are going to release a whole lot of archival stuff under their [[Creative Archive Licence][http://creativearchive.bbc.co.uk/]]

The downside of this is that the acces is restricted to the UK only. However, if I were to use an anonymous proxy in the UK then I would be able to get it from Mexico.

How?

Some UK proxies are listed at http://www.samair.ru/proxy/proxy-12.htm

One example is 213.86.197.27:80

Just put thin in the browser proxy settings and away you go. You can check that it is working by visiting http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox,net (click on the button at the bottom of the page). It does make things slow however.

There are also some web-based proxies that encrypt stuff too. One example is http://www.the-cloak.com All seem to be in the US though. Might be useful for accessing itunes or something (except you can't from linux anyway).
