Countless stars, cosmic dust, abundant gas, and maybe something else? Galaxies contain all of this. Yet, they are not static; they do not simply float in space, undisturbed. Since their formation billions of years ago, they have undergone significant changes, sometimes on their own, and at other times influenced by other galaxies… something similar to people.
This Friday, September 25, Rosa Amelia González, a researcher at UNAM Morelia, will explain how galaxies, despite their individual differences, share so many similarities that we can learn a great deal about them just by looking at their images.
"The Surprising Regularity of Galaxies: Simplicity from Complexity" is the title of this Astronomy Fridays talk, organized by the Institute of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics (IRyA). It will take place at 6:00 PM in the auditorium of the Unidad Académico-cultural (main auditorium) at UNAM Campus Morelia, located on Antigua Carretera a Pátzcuaro, opposite Tenencia Morelos.
Admission is free for all people, and no prior registration is required. Weather permitting, there will sky observation with telescopes after the talk. Additionally, there will be surprises for the audience at every session. All talks will be in Spanish.
There will be two more Astronomy Fridays this semester, in October and November. At each session, an IRyA researcher will answer questions submitted by past attendees. On October 30, William Henney will discuss "Star Patterns: Constellations Across Time and Cultures," and on November 27, Gilberto Gómez will share the "History of Telescopes: A Look at Astronomy's Past."
