Dr. Javier Ballesteros studied his undergraduate degree in physics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and completed his master’s and doctorate degrees in astronomy at the Institute of Astronomy at the same university. He has been a researcher at the Institute of Radioastronomy and Astrophysics (IRyA) of the UNAM since 2001.

He is known for his research into theoretical aspects of star formation, in particular, the competition between turbulence and gravitational collapse in molecular clouds.

Dr. Ballesteros received the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, for his contributions in the field of star formation.
