Laurent Loinard is Professor of Astronomy at the Institute for Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National University of Mexico (UNAM). A founding member of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, he has served as its Director since November 2025. He earned his PhD in astrophysics from Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble in 1998 and joined UNAM in 2000. A specialist in Very Long Baseline Interferometry, he is internationally recognized for ultra-precise measurements of astronomical distances and for imaging at the highest angular resolution in astronomy, with research spanning star formation, astrochemistry, radio stars, and supermassive black holes. He has published more than 250 refereed articles, cited some 30,000 times (h = 72). His honors include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Bessel Prize, the TWAS Prize, and — with the EHT — the Breakthrough Prize and the Einstein Medal. He has supervised more than thirty theses, and his students have earned distinctions of their own, including the IAU PhD Prize. An active science communicator, he has taken part in some 200 outreach activities — many of them talks for students and young audiences of all ages — and hosted the science podcast Cerebros en Órbita.

Laurent Loinard es investigador titular del Instituto de Radioastronomía y Astrofísica de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Miembro fundador de la colaboración Event Horizon Telescope, se desempeña como su director desde noviembre de 2025. Obtuvo su doctorado en astrofísica en la Universidad Joseph Fourier de Grenoble en 1998 y se incorporó a la UNAM en el año 2000. Especialista en interferometría de muy larga línea de base (VLBI), es reconocido internacionalmente por sus mediciones ultraprecisas de distancias astronómicas y por la obtención de imágenes con la más alta resolución angular en la astronomía. Su investigación abarca la formación estelar, la astroquímica, las estrellas con emisión de radio y los agujeros negros supermasivos. Ha publicado más de 250 artículos arbitrados, que han recibido cerca de 30,000 citas (índice h = 72). Entre sus distinciones se cuentan la beca Guggenheim, el Premio Bessel, el Premio TWAS y — junto con el consorcio EHT — el Premio Breakthrough y la Medalla Einstein. Ha dirigido más de treinta tesis, y sus estudiantes han obtenido reconocimientos propios, entre ellos el Premio de Tesis Doctoral de la Unión Astronómica Internacional (IAU PhD Prize). Divulgador activo de la ciencia, ha participado en unas 200 actividades de divulgación — muchas de ellas charlas para estudiantes y jóvenes de todas las edades — y condujo la serie de pódcasts Cerebros en Órbita.
