The James Webb Space Telescope observed for the first time some very, very distant, yet very massive—that is, very “fat”—galaxies. But at that time, the Universe was very young, so young that these galaxies shouldn't have had time to become so “heavy,” based on what we thought we knew about how galaxies form and the history of the Universe. They were called “impossible galaxies,” but are they really?
To answer this intriguing question, Jacopo Fritz, a researcher at the Institute of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics (IRyA) at UNAM, Campus Morelia, will share talk titled “These galaxies shouldn’t exist… or should they?”, on April 25th. This is the last talk of IRyA’s Astronomy Fridays this semester, celebrating 15 years with talks exploring how much we've learned about the universe in this time.
The talk will be held in Spanish at the UNAM Centro Cultural Morelia (Av. Acueducto no. 19, Centro, Morelia) at 7:30 p.m. Everyone can attend and admission is free. No prior registration is required. There will be surprises to mark the celebration of Astronomy Fridays 15 years.

About IRyA, UNAM
The Instituto de Radioastronomía y Astrofísica (IRyA), or Institute for Radioastronomy and Astrophysics is an academic unit at UNAM, Campus Morelia, Mexico. The Institute’s personnel perform high-level and high-impact research in the areas of interstellar medium, star formation, evolved stars, high energy astrophysics, Galactic dynamics and structure, extragalactic astronomy and cosmology. They also contribute to educate high-level human resources through a postgraduate program, and maintain a close relationship with society through diverse outreach and science communication programs.
