Dr. René A. Ortega Minakata obtained his undergraduate degree in physics from the University of Guadalajara, and did his postgraduate studies at the University of Guanajuato, studying the statistical properties of large samples of galaxies. He obtained his PhD in 2015. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Observatorio de Valongo of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, and then at the Institute of Astronomy of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), studying chemical abundances in the interstellar medium of galaxies. He has been involved in astronomy outreach activities consistently and frequently since 2009, and he also has teaching experience. He has been a member of the technical staff at UNAM since 2019.

He works in the Public Outreach and Scientific Communication department of the Institute of Radioastronomy and Astrophysics (IRyA) and organizes programs of public lectures and school visits. He also writes news items and press releases for the media, and and manages and creates content for the institutional social networks of the IRyA.
