•  The next solar eclipse will be on October 14, 2023. It will be annular in areas of the Yucatan Peninsula and partial in the rest of the country, including Michoacán.
  • There will be several observation sites in the state. In Morelia there will be venues at the UNAM Campus Morelia, UNAM Centro Cultural Morelia and Planetarium of Morelia “Lic. Felipe Rivera”

With the aim of safely enjoying the next solar eclipse, the Michoacán Local Committee for the observation of solar eclipses has been formed, working alongside the Eclipses México National Committee.

The eclipse will occur on October 14, 2023 and will be an annular solar eclipse in the southeastern region of the country, while in the rest of the country it will be observed as partial, including Michoacán. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy this spectacle of nature, so it is important for everyone to prepare to appreciate it safely.

Several observation sites are being prepared in the state. In Morelia there will be venues at the UNAM Campus Morelia (Antigua Carretera a Pátzcuaro, in front of Tenencia Morelos), at the UNAM Centro Cultural Morelia (Av. Acueducto esq. Calz. Fr. Antonio de San Miguel), and at the Morelia Planetarium “Lic. Felipe Rivera”. At these locations we will observe the eclipse safely with telescopes and eclipse glasses, as well as indirect projection, and we will have hands-on activities and other family-oriented activities.

For those who cannot attend in person at any of the venues, the Committees are preparing streaming the eclipse on social media in real time from various points of the country to follow the trajectory of the shadow of the Moon over Mexico, including the solar telescope of the ENES Unidad Morelia.

In addition, participating institutions are developing materials for the public that describe observation methods and safety instructions. Some are already distributed on social media and the websites of Eclipses Michoacán and Eclipses México. Materials will soon be distributed in P'urhépecha, Hñähñu (Otomi) and Nahuatl, native languages spoken in our state, as well as in Mexican Sign Language.
